Mechanical Engineer

Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer will interact with a growing engineering team by providing excellent coaching, mentoring, and team management. He/she will add value through critical decision-making by providing insight into design, functionality, and process definition with an eye towards scalability. He/she must demonstrate excellent process and project management skills to function effectively with peers and the senior management team.

  • Design subsystems, assemblies, and their components to meet customer and internal requirements within budget and schedule constraints.
  • Create bills of material and oversee creation of drawings to support new designs.
  • Prepare stress analysis, hydraulic diagrams, test criteria, and critical assembly instructions.
  • Analyze design reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Provide support to other departments, such as Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and Customer Service.
  • Supervise designers and other engineers on design tasks; function as lead on tasks of moderate complexity.
  • Cooperate with other mechanical, electrical, and software engineers on detailed design work, and work with sales and marketing on product research and definition.
  • Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that affect immediate organization(s).
  • Perform engineering duties at customer sites or offshore, when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • BSME degree.
  • Eight (8) or more years of work experience in the following areas (time may be concurrent):
    • Seven (7) or more years of machine design experience.
    • Two (2) or more years of experience with product development (may be concurrent with machine design experience).
    • One (1) or more years of technically leading teams on engineering development projects.
  • A firm understanding of mechanisms.
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D modeling software.
  • Analytical skills in structures, kinematics, and FEA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in design of remote equipment for harsh environments.
  • Experience in design of hydraulic actuators and components.
  • Proficient at AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or other 3D programs.
  • System level design experience.

Mechanical Engineering Manager

Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Manager directs and guides all activities relating to Schilling Robotics’ mechanical engineering efforts. The selected individual must demonstrate strong leadership and inspire excellence by keeping teams focused on delivering world-class products. He/she shall exercise initiative and independent judgment in creating structured engineering design processes that promote effectiveness and efficiency as well as champion, develop, and implement continuous process improvements.

The Mechanical Engineering Manager provides strong technical direction by evaluating and guiding product strategy, design, development, and related activities across various projects. He/she ensures excellence and compliance in project execution through effective project management and inter-departmental collaboration; guides change management, project planning, and resource allocation; and champion’s continuous process improvement.

  • Manages, plans, and directs mechanical engineering activities and staff with overall responsibility for delivering high quality products on time and on budget that meet/exceed requirements.
  • Establishes high quality standard for department and promotes sense of urgency and accountability.
  • Analyzes design, test, and feasibility studies of subsystems, assemblies, and their components to identify opportunities for design or time-to-market improvements.
  • Establishes and implements structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance.
  • Continuously seeks innovative ways to improve development productivity through the introduction of new technologies, tools, systems, methods, and controls.
  • Monitors and implements industry best practices to develop techniques to accomplish rapid execution of design related tasks, with a focus on getting things accomplished in the fewest calendar days possible.
  • Works closely with key stakeholders to define new products and ensure products meet or exceed customer requirements.
  • Ensures that proper documentation, such as test specifications, design changes and procedures, is provided to the appropriate functional areas.
  • Selects, develops, and provides guidance, coaching, and mentoring to mechanical engineering staff, including performance management and evaluations.
  • Acts as liaison with Marketing, Sales, Program Management, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, and Customer Service.
  • Responsible for resource allocation of staff within work level demands and budgetary constraints. Participates in developing and managing annual operating budget.
  • Monitors project status and pursues corrective action, as required in terms of schedules, budgets, priorities, staffing, and work quality.
  • Other applicable duties, as assigned or required.

Minimum Requirements

  • BSME degree with a minimum of 15 years of experience in product development.
  • 10 years engineering management experience.
  • Exceptional ability to lead, motivate, and manage high-performance people and teams.
  • Proven experience and knowledge in managing engineers to execute according to the new product development process.
  • Must be knowledgeable in leading machine design and/or complex products involving integration of mechanical, electrical, and software components; requires firm understanding of mechanisms.
  • Experience designing products for reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Must be comfortable and effective acting as a catalyst for change.
  • Experienced in creating structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance.
  • Strong ability to analyze, introduce, and drive process development improvements.
  • Proven success in managing timely completion of engineering projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, innovative problem solving skills, and strong facilitation skills.
  • Performance and results oriented with track record of developing, motivating, and leading strong, effective teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills, verbal and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to persuade and influence others.
  • Advanced user of 2D and 3D modeling software.
  • Knowledgeable in structures, kinematics, or FEA.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook/PowerPoint) and MS Project.
  • Ability to travel, as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Engineering or MBA.
  • Managing a complex portfolio of products.
  • Experience in hydraulic actuators and components.
  • Experience managing remotely operated products or products used in harsh environments.
